Each lane is named after the products or professions like Maniharon Ka Raasta, Tikkiwaalon Ka Raasta, Nataniyon Ka Raasta, etc.
The Tripolia bazar is famous for its lac bangles, specially handcrafted by the local artisans.
The festivals of Teej and Gangaur are celebrated with great elan. The market is completely crowded and there are processions and fairs held.
History of Tripolia Bazar Jaipur
Being one of the oldest and the busiest markets of Jaipur, the Tripolia Bazar got its name from Tripolia Gate wherein, ‘Tri’ means three and ‘Pol’ means gates in Rajasthani. Tripolia bazar is a lined street by the Tripolia Gate, which was built in 1734. The Tripolia Gate was used as the main entrance to the City Palace. However, it is only accessible to the royal family and their guests to enter the palace. As of today, the gate serves as the entrance gate to both City Palace and Jantar Mantar.
The gates were closed to the general public after the Jaipur state merged with Rajasthan to form a single state. They would rather use the other gates like the Virendra Pol or Udai Pol to enter the City palace.
Shopping at Tripolia Bazar Jaipur
Being the oldest markets of Jaipur, the Tripolia Bazar has been the busiest markets for the locals and is frequented by the locals more than the number of tourists visiting Jaipur. The market has a mix of collections ranging from household utilities and fashion accessories including lac bangles, that are a specialty of Jaipuri markets.
1. Lac Bangles, Fashion Accessories and Utilities: Tripolia Bazar is well known for its range of lac bangles that come in all colors and are very attractive. Apart from bangles, Tripolia Bazar also has a wide variety of lac jewelleries to offer including earrings, necklaces, chokers and bracelets.
Tripolia bazar is also abundant with precious stones.
In addition to the lac jewelleries, Tripolia Bazar also has collections of precious stones, brass utensils, including utensils made of iron and stainless steel as well. It is the best place for brass and iron utensils in the whole of Jaipur.
2. Carpets and Rugs: Jaipur is famous for the colourful and vibrant carpets with Indo-Heratic designs which were first introduced by Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II (1835- 1880). The embroideries and designs on the carpets resemble portraits, landscapes, flowers and motifs. There are carpets that have geometric designs too, giving them a contemporary touch.
The Jaipuri rugs are also of great quality. They are rugged and sturdy.
Another type of cheap or low- quality carpets found in Jaipur are called Durrie. They are used as a replacement for expensive carpets and used by people who cannot afford the expensive ones.
3. Maniharon Ka Raasta: The busy Tripolia bazar ends at Maniharon ka Raasta, the portion of the street that still holds a close connection to the regality of the past. The extension of the market is due to the shyness of citizens. Maniharon Ka Raasta majorly deals with lac bangles of all kinds. The entire market is visited by women due to it being known for the bangles only and the bangles are decorated with precious to semi- precious stones, beads, crystal and other embellishments.
The craftsmen who make the lac bangles are believed to have arrived from Manoharpur in Uttar Pradesh on the invitation of the then Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh. The Muslim Manihari women handle the shops here and also are involved in creating the lac bangles using all kinds of embellishments.
4. Food and Sweets: The kulhadd lassi and kachoris of Tripolia bazar are not to be missed. There is a lane called ‘Namkeen waali Gali’ wherein one can find a wide variety of salty and spiced snacks. Shankar Namkeen, Ashish Namkeen and Shri Agarwal Namkeen are few famous outlets to get the best of namkeen at Tripolia Bazar.
