Jaipur is one of the most fascinating ancient cities and the top tourist destinations of India. It is a gateway to the colourful state of Rajasthan. Jaipur is also known as Pink City owing to its distinctive architecture and pink hue. The city's streets include a potent mix of the ancient and new, evoking the royal families who previously ruled the region.
Jaipur is famous throughout the world for its excellent and exquisite temples. The Maharajas and kings who controlled the area constructed most of the temples in the city. Until now, these exquisitely built and constructed temples have drawn a large number of worshippers seeking the Lord's graces.
The artistry and architecture of the temples are unique as compared to temples found elsewhere. These temples are also excellent places to spend some quality time relaxing in serene surroundings. If you want to visit such temples, the Sun temple would be a perfect destination for you.
About Sun Temple Jaipur
The Sun Temple stands tall on the city's eastern hill range, the Galta hills. Locals also refer to it as Surya Mandir. It is one of Jaipur's most famous heritage temples. It comes en route to the Jaipur Monkey Temple or Galtaji Temple. Since its inception, the Sun Temple has been overseen by the priest family.
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II was crucial in the construction of Jaipur's Surya Temple.
#Trivia: Diwan Rao Kripa Ram, a minister in the court of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, built The Sun Temple in 1734 AD.
Architecture of Sun Temple Jaipur
The Sun temple shares the same architectural style as the Kalki temple. The temple stands on a hill with a rising platform. Majorly constructed of stone masonry and lime, the temple's massive gate is reminiscent of one from a noble mansion. The outside walls resemble a miniature fortress.
Jaipur's city plan had the Sthapatya Veda (an old Indian architectural science) as its base. Therefore temples were strategically positioned around the city. The Sun Temple is on the eastern side of the ancient Jaipur city.
The road that starts in front of the Sun Temple used to be the most important arterial road in the city, linking the East and West gates (the walled city or old Jaipur). Suraj Pol was on the east side, while Chand Pol was on the west. Suraj is the Hindi word for Sun, while Chand is for Moon. The temple faces north, with the entrance for worshipers on the east side.
Location of Sun Temple Jaipur
The temple is located at the Galta Gate, Jaipur, Rajasthan.
Importance of Surya Mandir Jaipur
It is a perfect location for historians. According to recent government research, the features on the temple walls are not visible due to the lime whitewash. Experts will soon uncover the temple's true beauty. If you are an avid cyclist, enjoy a peaceful cycle ride around the temple with your partner or friends or alone!
Entry Fee and Timings of Surya Mandir Jaipur
The entry is free for everyone. Devotees can visit the Surya Mandir from sunrise to sunset, i.e. from 5 am to 7 pm. It is mandatory to remove shoes at the entry gate. You can take your cameras inside the temple.
The Sun temple remains closed between 12 noon to 4 pm every day.
Due to its location, you may want to get back home sooner than later as local priests claim to have spotted leopards and panthers too.
Best Time to Visit the Sun Temple Jaipur
The best time to visit the temple is the winter season i.e. from October to March.
Things to do at the Surya Mandir Jaipur
Enjoy the sunset: Have you replayed watching the sunset in your mind so many times that it starts to look natural? An evening here looks like a gateway to heaven, peaceful and surreal. There's something distinctive about the winter sky, which has a grey tint, and the light takes on a darker hue. As a result, the sunset is far more majestic and lovely. In contrast, the Sun has a distinct golden tint during the summer.
Biking and Hiking: An excellent place for mountain bikers and hikers, it is surrounded by a plethora of natural paths. These trails are incredible, and even though they get you warmed up and make you sweat, they are well worth it. Each route leads you to a vantage point from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city.
How to Reach the Sun Temple?
By Bus: The Sindhi Camp Bus stand is 6.5 kilometres from the temple.
Railway Station: Jaipur Junction Railway Station is around 10 kilometres from the temple.
Airport: The Jaipur International Airport is 14 kilometres from the temple.
There are two routes.
One can arrive at the Galta temple and take a 1.5-kilometre uphill hike. This route is outside of the city. You can reach here by booking a taxi from top car rental companies in Jaipur.
#Tip: Be careful of the Monkeys here.
Via the Delhi Bypass route, one may go to Galta Gate or Surajpole Gate via bus, cab, taxi, vehicle, or hired bike. You can then reach the temple after a 15-minute uphill hike.
The Sun Temple is an excellent location for travellers since it is distant from the city bustle. If you prefer spending time alone or enjoying mountains, this is the place to be and soak in the goodness of serenity around. Enjoy two to three hours admiring the beautiful view and the majestic beauty of the Sun Temple of Jaipur on your next visit.
